The Five-Star Hotel vs. The Million-Star View

We all have a touring routine. Ride 400 kilometers, start scrolling through hotel booking apps around 5 PM, haggle for a room that smells faintly of damp carpet, sleep, and repeat. It’s comfortable, sure. But is it adventure?

There is a growing tribe of riders in India who are trading air-conditioned rooms for something wilder. They are strapping tents to their tail racks and embracing "Motocamping."

It’s about waking up next to the view you rode all the way to see, rather than driving to it after breakfast. It's about brewing coffee on a portable stove while the sun hits your bike. It’s the ultimate sense of self-sufficiency.

But let’s be real: Camping in India isn't like camping in Europe or the US. You can't just pitch a tent anywhere.

The Indian Context: Safety First

The biggest hurdle for Indian riders is safety. Here is how to start without ending up in a horror movie scenario:

  • Start Managed: Don't head into deep jungles for your first trip. Book a spot at a managed campsite in places like Pawna Lake (Maharashtra), Dandeli (Karnataka), or Rishikesh (Uttarakhand). It’s a safe environment to test your gear.

  • The Farm Hack: Have a friend with farm land near the city? That’s your perfect practice ground.

  • The "Ask a Local" Rule: In remote areas like Spiti or Ladakh, never pitch a tent without asking the nearest village head or dhaba owner. Often, they will let you camp near their property for a small fee, offering security and sometimes even a bathroom.

The Gear: Keep it Simple

Don't drop ₹50,000 on camping gear right away. You need three essentials:

  1. Shelter: A basic 2-person dome tent (Decathlon is your friend).

  2. Sleep: A sleeping bag rated for the temperature and, crucially, a sleeping mat. The ground sucks the heat right out of you; the mat is for insulation, not just comfort.

  3. Food: Don't try to be a masterchef on day one. Cup noodles, bread, and peanut butter are fine. The goal is to sleep outside, not win a cooking competition.

Motocamping changes how you travel. It’s cheaper, quieter, and infinitely more memorable. Trade that damp hotel room for a million-star view on your next ride.
